Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a bold call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire with Russia, proposing a 30-day truce that would begin “this very moment” if accepted.

The announcement was made through an official statement on his Telegram account shortly after holding a phone conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump. According to Zelensky, the discussion focused on the need to de-escalate tensions, the evolving situation on the battlefield, and ways to revive diplomatic engagement.

“Ukraine is ready for a complete ceasefire starting now,” Zelensky declared. “This should include the suspension of all military operations—missile strikes, drone attacks, and frontline assaults—for at least 30 days to allow diplomacy to take root.”

Zelensky’s offer comes as Russia recently announced a unilateral 72-hour ceasefire, presented as a humanitarian gesture to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory in World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin, during commemorations in Moscow’s Red Square, stated that the temporary truce could serve as a “path to dialogue.”

However, Ukraine has expressed skepticism. According to Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Andrii Sybiha, Russian forces committed over 700 violations of the short-lived ceasefire within just 12 hours. He called it a “charade designed for propaganda.”

Meanwhile, Trump, who is campaigning for re-election, endorsed Zelensky’s ceasefire proposal. He also warned of additional sanctions against Moscow if the plan is ignored. Trump further revealed the two nations had reached a critical minerals agreement, which he claimed would strengthen Ukraine’s economy and reduce Western reliance on strategic resources from rival nations. “Peace must come with accountability,” Trump said. “The world is watching what Russia does next.”

As global attention turns toward the potential ceasefire, questions remain about Moscow’s true willingness to end the conflict. Ukraine’s leadership, while open to talks, has emphasized that any lasting resolution must involve respect for international law, territorial sovereignty, and justice for victims of the war.

Analysts suggest Zelensky’s public outreach—especially via platforms like Telegram—is aimed not just at Russia, but at galvanizing global support, particularly from Western allies and neutral states.

Whether this marks the beginning of a breakthrough or another missed opportunity in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war remains to be seen.
