Tanzania has been praised for its digital transformation in the communications sector across Africa, achieving 98% coverage of communication services and 75.55% SIM card registration. These advancements have positioned the country as a digital leader on the continent, culminating in its selection as the host of the 14th African Internet Governance Forum (AfIGF 2025).
The forum was held in Dar es Salaam from May 29 to 31, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre. The event attracted over 1,000 participants from 40 African countries under the theme: “Enabling Africa’s Digital Future.”
Speaking at the closing ceremony on May 31, Mohammed Khamis Abdulla, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Communication and Information Technology, stated that Tanzania continues to enhance digital policies to ensure nationwide internet access, including in rural areas.
A key outcome of the forum was the “Dar es Salaam Internet Declaration”, which will be presented at a global summit in Norway in December 2025.
The forum addressed major topics including:
-
Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
-
Strengthening of e-Government
-
Expansion of the digital economy
-
Regional cooperation for affordable internet access.
The AfIGF 2025 reflects the increasing importance of multistakeholder collaboration in shaping Africa’s digital landscape and highlights Tanzania’s leadership role in this transformative journey.
