The Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, held strategic talks with senior leadership of a major Vietnamese telecommunications company during his official visit to Hanoi, Vietnam.
The meeting, which took place at the company’s headquarters on April 28, 2025, focused on exploring new investment opportunities in Tanzania and expanding bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, technology, and infrastructure development.
Ambassador Kombo was received by Colonel Dao Xuan Vu, Vice President of the Vietnamese telecommunications group, which has operational links to Tanzania through a regional branch. Discussions centered on identifying specific areas for collaboration, particularly in the digital economy, mobile infrastructure, and broadband expansion.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, the talks were part of a broader diplomatic and investment mission to attract foreign direct investment and bolster Tanzania’s international economic presence.
During the visit, Minister Kombo was accompanied by several senior officials including Tanzania’s Ambassador to Vietnam (residing in the People’s Republic of China), Hon. Khamis Omar, Director of Economic Diplomacy and International Trade Ambassador John Ulanga, and the Director of the Asia and Australasia Department Ms. Felista Rugambwa. Tanzania is keen to learn and collaborate in areas that will help us modernize our telecommunications infrastructure and support economic transformation,” he noted.
The Vietnamese firm expressed strong interest in expanding its footprint in Tanzania, noting the country’s growing demand for reliable telecommunications services, its stable political environment, and strategic location in East Africa. Colonel Vu reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening long-term cooperation that supports both sides.
The meeting comes as Tanzania and Vietnam mark 60 years of diplomatic relations, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation across multiple sectors including agriculture, education, industrial development, and digital innovation.
Minister Kombo’s visit is part of a larger regional outreach to Asia aimed at diversifying Tanzania’s investment partnerships and opening new frontiers in international trade. As global competition for investment intensifies, Tanzania’s efforts to attract Asian investors signal a shift toward proactive and targeted diplomacy aligned with national development priorities.
