The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) in Tanzania has intensified efforts to encourage citizens to build infrastructure for rainwater harvesting every rainy season. This initiative aims to ensure a steady and reliable water supply throughout the year, particularly during dry spells.
Speaking in Dodoma, the capital city of Tanzania, on May 16, 2025, EWURA’s Director General, Dr. James Andilile, highlighted the importance of capturing rainwater as a vital resource for households and communities. He explained that harvested rainwater can be used to irrigate crops, water animals, and meet domestic needs.
“Rainwater harvesting is a simple yet effective way to prevent rainwater from running off and being wasted,” Dr. Andilile said. “By collecting and storing it, we create a valuable reserve that can serve many purposes.”
EWURA is the regulatory authority overseeing water supply and sanitation services in Tanzania. Its responsibilities include ensuring efficient water production and distribution, as well as enforcing policies and strategies that enhance service delivery across the country.

Dr. Andilile emphasized that rainwater harvesting not only helps secure an alternative source of water but also supports water authorities in managing supply shortages. Since May 2023, EWURA has actively promoted this practice through a nationwide campaign to raise awareness among Tanzanians.
Building systems to collect rainwater can reduce dependence on other water sources and improve resilience against the effects of climate change and drought. This method contributes to agricultural productivity and public health by increasing access to clean water.
