Mozambican President Daniel Francisco Chapo has arrived in Tanzania for a three-day state visit. This marks his first official trip to the country since taking office in January 2025.
The visit is widely viewed as a move to deepen bilateral relations between Mozambique and Tanzania, two countries historically linked by shared liberation struggles and economic ties. It is also seen as part of President Chapo’s broader strategy to expand regional partnerships early in his presidency, following his recent visit to South Africa in March.
President Chapo is expected to meet with his Tanzanian counterpart, Samia Suluhu Hassan, for high-level talks focused on mutual economic interests, infrastructure development, regional security, and investment cooperation. The leaders will oversee the signing of several bilateral agreements following an official welcoming ceremony in the capital, Dodoma.
The Mozambican head of state will also visit the African Liberation Heritage Centre, a symbolic site preserving the legacy of the continent’s fight for independence. His itinerary includes a tour of Tanzania’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Station in Dar es Salaam—a flagship infrastructure project—and a formal visit to Zanzibar, underscoring the historical and cultural linkages between the two nations.

At the core of the talks is a shared ambition to reinvigorate cross-border trade and fast-track strategic initiatives left pending under Chapo’s predecessor, Filipe Nyusi. Both nations are key players in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and their cooperation plays a crucial role in stabilizing and economically integrating the region.
Mozambique is actively pursuing foreign investment and economic reform, especially in its energy and mining sectors. According to projections, the country aims to increase its Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by 40 percent this year—jumping from $3.55 billion in 2024 to over $5 billion in 2025—an ambition strongly tied to stronger regional partnerships like the one with Tanzania.
For Tanzania, the visit reinforces its role as a diplomatic and logistical hub in East and Southern Africa, further aligning with its development agenda under President Samia’s leadership.
