Tanzania is gearing up to introduce a fresh foreign policy that reflects the country’s long-term development goals and modern global challenges.

The new policy, set to be officially launched on May 19 by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, is expected to align with the country’s forthcoming National Development Vision 2025–2050.

The announcement was made by Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, during a media briefing in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.

“This updated policy aims to reposition Tanzania globally,” said Ambassador Kombo. “It will focus on vital sectors like economic diplomacy, diaspora relations, climate change, gender inclusion, youth empowerment, and the promotion of our cultural identity — especially through the use of the Swahili language.”

The launch will mark the first major revamp of Tanzania’s foreign policy since 2004 — a move Kombo said was long overdue. “Tanzania has achieved many milestones in trade, regional cooperation, and innovation. But we haven’t told our story loudly enough on the international stage,” he said.

Key to the strategy is economic diplomacy, an area where the country seeks to attract foreign investment, boost exports, and enhance regional integration. “We’re not just opening doors to the world — we want to walk through them with confidence and purpose,” Kombo added.

The new policy also reflects a broader shift in how nations define foreign engagement. It will integrate social development goals and seek partnerships that support Tanzania’s aspirations for a sustainable and inclusive future. The government believes a strong international presence will help unlock new opportunities for its youth and entrepreneurs.

President Samia’s leadership has been marked by a renewed emphasis on diplomacy, regional collaboration, and progressive governance. This new foreign policy is seen as an extension of her administration’s vision to modernize Tanzania’s role in global affairs.

The unveiling of the policy will take place during a special event in Dar es Salaam, with stakeholders from various sectors and foreign missions expected to attend.
