Arusha Police Arrest Lawyer and Boda Boda Rider

The police have taken two individuals into custody independent lawyer Qamara Valerian, 36, and a 19-year-old boda boda rider named Benjamin Paul after they were accused of being involved in the assault and injury of a 75-year-old South African woman, Suzan Shawe.

The incident took place on January 21, 2025, when Shawe was allegedly attacked by a group of people who are said to have been sent by Qamara. It’s claimed they tried to force her out of her home over an unresolved rent dispute.

Speaking about the case on Saturday, January 25, 2025, Arusha Regional Police Commander Justine Masejo said that Shawe had been confronted at her residence by the attackers, who allegedly acted on instructions from Qamara. The assailants reportedly tried to evict her forcefully, citing her failure to pay rent. Shawe was injured during the attack, although the specifics of her injuries have not been revealed.

Commander Masejo confirmed that the police are continuing their investigation into the incident. “We are still looking into the matter, and once the investigation is completed, appropriate legal steps will follow,” he said.

The incident has raised concerns about the increasing tension between landlords and tenants, especially in cases involving foreigners. While disputes over rent are not uncommon, this particular case has brought attention to the violent way in which the issue was handled.

As the investigation moves forward, questions have been raised regarding the role of lawyers in such disputes, and whether they are ethically or legally allowed to encourage forceful evictions. At this time, Qamara, who remains in custody, has not publicly responded to the allegations, and no formal charges have yet been brought against him.

The case has sparked interest both locally and internationally, particularly among human rights organizations that are worried about the treatment of foreign nationals in the country. There are growing calls for authorities to act swiftly and ensure justice is served, as well as to prevent further instances of eviction-related violence.
