Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, has arrived in Hanoi for a three-day state visit aimed at strengthening the long-standing friendship between Tanzania and Vietnam.

Touching down at Noi Bai International Airport on April 27, Minister Kombo was warmly received by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Mr. Khamis Omar, and a group of senior Vietnamese government officials. His arrival marks the start of a packed schedule, where he will lead Tanzania’s delegation in high-level talks designed to broaden cooperation between the two nations.

During his visit, Minister Kombo is expected to meet with senior Vietnamese leaders to explore new areas of partnership. Discussions will focus on expanding trade links, boosting investment opportunities, and opening up fresh markets for Tanzanian agricultural and fishery products. Other key topics on the agenda include advancing technological collaboration and industrial development initiatives that will benefit both countries.

Accompanying the Minister are senior Tanzanian officials, including the Director of the Tanzania Investment Center, Mr. Gilead Teri, Ambassador John Ulanga from the Department of Economic Diplomacy and International Trade, and Ms. Felista Rugambwa, Director of the Asia and Australasia Department. Representatives from the private sector are also part of the delegation, signaling Tanzania’s commitment to nurturing a broad-based economic partnership with Vietnam.

Tanzania and Vietnam enjoy a rich history of cooperation dating back more than half a century. Over recent years, trade between the two nations has flourished. Tanzanian exports to Vietnam grew from USD 226.6 million in 2020 to USD 314.2 million in 2024 — a rise of 38 percent. Meanwhile, imports from Vietnam also tripled, reaching USD 60 million by 2023.

Vietnam’s investment footprint in Tanzania is equally impressive. Vietnamese firms have poured an estimated USD 2.362 billion into Tanzania’s construction, finance, manufacturing, and communications sectors, helping to create more than 226,000 jobs for Tanzanians.

Vietnam first established its embassy in Tanzania on February 14, 1964, laying the foundation for a relationship that continues to thrive today. Minister Kombo’s visit is seen as a testament to that enduring bond and a fresh opportunity to build even closer ties for the future.
