A wave of outrage and concern has swept across Tanzania following a shocking attack on Father Dr. Charles Kitima, the Secretary-General of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), who was assaulted on April 30 in Kurasini, Dar es Salaam.

According to police reports, Father Kitima was ambushed by two assailants who struck him on the head with a blunt object before fleeing the scene. He is currently receiving medical care at Aga Khan Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.

The assault has triggered a rare moment of unity across the country’s political and religious divide. The ruling party, opposition leaders, religious institutions, and law enforcement have all strongly condemned the attack and demanded swift action.

Ambassador Emmanuel Nchimbi, Secretary-General of the ruling party, expressed sympathy and called for a thorough investigation. “This was not only an attack on a respected religious leader but a blow to the values of peace and tolerance we hold dear as a nation,” he said.

TEC also released a statement denouncing the violence and calling on authorities to ensure a transparent and speedy investigation. “The safety of our leaders and clergy is paramount, and no one should feel unsafe because of their service to the community,” the statement read.

The police have since confirmed the arrest of one suspect, identified as Rauli Mahabi, who is currently being held for questioning. While no motive has been officially disclosed, authorities say the investigation is progressing and that the public will be kept informed.

ACT-Wazalendo, one of the country’s main opposition parties, called the attack “deeply disturbing,” warning that it signals a broader threat to religious freedom and public safety. “This is not just about one man,” the party noted. “It’s about preserving the right of all citizens—especially our faith leaders—to live and serve without fear.”

The incident has also reignited discussions around the protection of religious leaders and the need for stronger security measures to deter future attacks.

Father Kitima, a respected theologian and academic, is known for his calm demeanor and thoughtful contributions to national dialogue. His recovery is being closely followed by many, with messages of support continuing to flood in from clergy, community members, and government officials alike.
