As Christians across the country celebrated Easter with joy and reflection, maternity wards in several Dar es Salaam hospitals were also filled with the sound of new beginnings.
In the span of just one night — Easter Eve into early Easter morning — a total of 29 babies were delivered in a heartwarming turn of events that brought smiles to both families and healthcare workers.
At Mwananyamala Regional Referral Hospital, ten babies were born during the night, equally split between five boys and five girls. According to the hospital’s public relations officer, Florian Godwin, seven of the births were through natural delivery, while three were delivered via cesarean section. “All the babies and their mothers are doing very well,” he shared, emphasizing that the night was both busy and joyful for the medical staff.
Just a short drive away at Temeke Hospital, six more newborns — four girls and two boys — entered the world. Onesmo Milanzi, the hospital’s spokesperson, confirmed that all the deliveries were smooth and natural. “It was a night of celebration, and we’re happy to report that everyone is in good health,” he said.

The maternity units at Muhimbili National Hospital’s Upanga and Mloganzila campuses also reported deliveries, although specific numbers from these centers were not made public at the time of reporting. Still, hospital representatives assured that all mothers and newborns were stable and receiving proper care.
The timing of these births — coinciding with one of the most sacred nights on the Christian calendar — added an extra layer of meaning to the celebration. For the families who welcomed children on Easter Eve, the moment carried not just personal joy but also spiritual significance.
Healthcare workers who were on duty through the night described the atmosphere in the maternity wards as hopeful and uplifting. Nurses and doctors worked tirelessly to ensure safe deliveries, supported by a growing number of maternal health resources recently provided to regional hospitals.
The arrival of 29 babies during this special night served as a symbol of new life, reminding everyone of the hope and renewal that Easter brings — not just spiritually, but in the very real cries of newborns taking their first breath.
