The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) has invited filmmakers to submit their films for the festival.
The festival is open to all African films (including African Diaspora) and films from the Dhow Countries’ region- South East Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, The Persian Gulf, Iran, Pakistan, India and the Indian Ocean Islands.
The submission process started yesterday and will end on May 5th, 2024. Films eligible for submission must have a production date after January 1st, 2022. ZIFF retains the authority to consider films that align with the festival’s specific interests.
The festival is scheduled for August 1st to August 4th, 2024, with a specific focus this year on TV drama series from East African Countries including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia, and the Republic of the Congo.

TV drama series should range from 25 to 60 minutes per episode. Productions are encouraged to align with the festival theme of “Rejuvenation” and prioritize themes of global cultural interaction, cultural encounters, or sociocultural commentary. Films must be finalized by May 5th, 2024.
The festival will consider works in progress upon approval from ZIFF management. The main competition, including the Golden Dhow and Silver Dhow awards, is exclusively for filmmakers from the Dhow countries.
These countries include the Indian Ocean Rim and Indian Ocean Islands, including Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and India, and all African countries. ZIFF competition categories 2024 are Best Feature Film, Best Documentary, and Emerson Award for the Best Zanzibar Film, Best Short Film or Best Animation, Best East African Film, The Sembene Ousmane Award for the Best Film for Development, Best Actor (East Africa), Best Actress (East Africa), Best Actor (Tanzania), Best Actress (Tanzania). The ZIFF Board will offer the following Awards: Chairperson’s Award and Lifetime Achievement.
The People’s Choice Award is reserved for TV drama Series from East African Community (EAC) countries (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Somalia, and the DR Congo). The TV drama series should be between 25 to 60 minutes in length per episode.
The Films out of competition section is open to all films, including festival screening partnerships.
Furthermore, the submission should encompass a press kit containing technical and artistic information, an English synopsis, photographs, posters, press articles, and more.
The director’s bio-data is a required component. The Zanzibar International Film Festival is a prestigious annual event that features films from various regions, fosters cultural exchange, and honors the dynamic art of filmmaking.
