The People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria has donated nine tonnes of educational equipment valued at more than USD 600,000 to Ahmed Ben Bella Secondary School in Zanzibar.
The educational equipment arrived in Zanzibar aboard an Algerian aircraft on July 13, 2026, ahead of an official handover ceremony held at Ahmed Ben Bella Secondary School. The ceremony was presided over by the Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria to Tanzania Ambassador Ghalib Zemane, and attended by Zanzibar’s Minister of Education and Vocational Training,Hon. Lela Muhamed Mussa ,Senior government officials, education stakeholders, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Addressing the gathering, the Algerian Ambassador Zemane, said the donation reflects his country’s continued commitment to supporting education and enhancing the learning environment at Ahmed Ben Bella Secondary School. He noted that the initiative also symbolizes the enduring friendship, fraternity and solidarity that have characterized relations between Algeria and Tanzania for decades.

Ambassador Zemane, further explained that the donation carries special historical significance, as the school is named after Ahmed Ben Bella, one of the architects of the Algerian Revolution and the first President of independent Algeria, who maintained a close friendship with Tanzania’s founding President, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
He described the handover as another milestone in the growing bilateral cooperation between the two countries, emphasizing that the educational equipment will contribute significantly to improving teaching and learning at the school.
The donation underscores the strong diplomatic and development partnership between Algeria and Tanzania, reaffirming both countries’ shared commitment to advancing education and fostering closer cooperation for the benefit of future generations.
Ben Bella High School is located in Shaurimoyo Ward, Mjini Magharibi Region, Zanzibar. Easily accessible to the surrounding community, the school serves as an important centre of learning for students in the area.
It offers both Ordinary Level and Advanced Level education, with a wide range of subjects in science, arts and business studies. At Advanced Level, the school provides several subject combinations, including PCM—Physics, Chemistry and Advanced Mathematics; PCB—Physics, Chemistry and Biology; and CBG—Chemistry, Biology and Geography, among others.
