Fuel Prices Fall Nationwide, Offer Relief

Wholesale prices have been adjusted accordingly. In Dar es Salaam, petrol now sells at TZS 2,816.35 per litre for bulk buyers, while diesel is priced at TZS 2,736.43, and kerosene at TZS 2,921.56.

Tanzanians will feel some relief at the fuel pump this month following a nationwide drop in fuel prices, as announced by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA).

The new prices, which took effect today, come at a time when transport and business costs are under pressure.

In its latest review, EWURA said the drop reflects several key factors, including a decline in global oil prices, reduced import charges, and a small gain in the Tanzanian shilling against the United States dollar. The result is a decrease in both retail and wholesale fuel prices across the country.

For motorists in Dar es Salaam, petrol now sells at TZS 2,947 per litre, diesel at TZS 2,868, and kerosene at TZS 3,053. While these prices bring some relief, they differ slightly in other parts of the country. In Tanga, petrol goes for TZS 2,994, and in Mtwara, where fuel distribution tends to be more expensive, the same litre of petrol costs TZS 3,020. Diesel and kerosene prices have followed similar regional trends.

Behind the adjustments is a broader global picture. Over the past month, the cost of refined fuel products from the Arabian Gulf — the benchmark market for Tanzania’s imports — has fallen by just over 5%. At the same time, premiums paid to bring fuel into the country have dropped sharply, especially in ports like Mtwara, where reductions hit more than 30%.

“The decline in premiums is especially helpful,” said an official familiar with the review. “It means lower transport and insurance costs, and that makes a difference in what consumers ultimately pay.”

Adding to the positive trend is a modest 1.2% strengthening of the Tanzanian shilling, which also contributed to lowering the overall cost of imports.

Wholesale prices have been adjusted accordingly. In Dar es Salaam, petrol now sells at TZS 2,816.35 per litre for bulk buyers, while diesel is priced at TZS 2,736.43, and kerosene at TZS 2,921.56.

EWURA has reminded fuel station operators to adhere strictly to the published price caps and called on consumers to report any overcharging. The authority believes that the new prices will ease transportation costs and reduce pressure on prices for goods and services — especially important as many households prepare for mid-year activities, school terms, and farming logistics.

For now, both consumers and businesses hope the trend continues. With global energy markets still unpredictable, the coming months will reveal whether these lower prices are a brief reprieve or the start of more lasting stability.
