A critical debate erupted in the Tanzanian Parliament concerning the alarming increase in abductions, murders, and disappearances, including cases involving children.
The debate was initiated by Anatropia Theonest, a Member of Parliament representing Special Seats, who pressed for a comprehensive government strategy to tackle these severe issues.
During a session with the Prime Minister, Anatropia underscored that the rise in such incidents signals serious human rights violations. She noted that these events have manifested in various forms, such as personal disputes driven by jealousy and accusations of witchcraft. However, Anatropia’s most significant concern was that some of these abductions and disappearances might be linked to state agencies. She called for transparency and asked the government to outline its measures for preventing these occurrences and alleviating the resulting community distress.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Tulia Ackson, informed the House that a related issue had been raised earlier by Aida Khenani, the Member of Parliament for Nkasi Kaskazini from the Democratic Change Party (Chadema), on August 27, 2024. Khenani had demanded an investigation into these disturbing incidents, referring to recent unsettling reports about a local traditional healer, who also held a police position. According to Khenani, this individual was implicated in the burial of several bodies, an allegation that has stirred considerable concern and calls for a thorough inquiry.
The debate reflects growing apprehension among lawmakers and the public about the safety and human rights situation in Tanzania. It highlights the urgent need for a detailed investigation into the alleged involvement of state agencies in these criminal activities. Additionally, it underscores the necessity for robust government action to address the issues raised, restore public confidence, and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
