Tanzania has announced the establishment of a specialized task force to tackle cyber-related offenses and ensure digital safety.
This decision was made during a meeting convened on November 22, 2024, at the headquarters of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) in Dar es Salaam. The gathering brought together key government figures, including Minister of Home Affairs Engineer Hamad Masauni and Minister of Information, Communication, and Information Technology Jerry Silaa, alongside other stakeholders from government agencies and the private sector.
Task Force Composition and Objectives
The newly formed task force will consist of experts drawn from various government ministries and institutions. Its mandate will focus on investigating, preventing, and prosecuting cybercrime offenses. The initiative aims to address an array of online threats, including hacking, fraud, identity theft, and the proliferation of harmful digital content.
Minister Masauni emphasized that creating a safe and trustworthy digital environment is paramount for Tanzania’s economic and social development. He stated, “Cybercrime is not only a threat to individuals and businesses but also to the nation’s security and sovereignty. This task force will ensure that offenders are identified and brought to justice.”
Minister Silaa added that the initiative aligns with Tanzania’s National Cybersecurity Strategy, which seeks to strengthen legal frameworks, enhance public awareness, and foster cooperation with international stakeholders. He highlighted the importance of building capacity to keep pace with the rapid technological advancements that cybercriminals exploit.
National and Regional Importance
The initiative is part of Tanzania’s broader efforts to secure its digital transformation and maintain its position as one of Africa’s leaders in cybersecurity readiness. According to global rankings, Tanzania is among the top two African nations in preparedness against cyber threats. However, with cyberattacks becoming increasingly sophisticated, the government recognizes the urgency of reinforcing its defenses.
