After more than three decades since the Hungarian embassy in Tanzania closed, the country is now in the final stages of reopening diplomatic missions as part of agreements to strengthen ties between the two nations.
The announcement was made during the visit of Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, who met with Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba.
Mr. Szijjarto, the first Hungarian Foreign Minister to visit Tanzania in over 30 years, emphasized the significance of the relationship between the two countries. He stated that recognizing the importance of cooperation between Tanzania and Hungary, embassy offices will be reinstated starting next month.
Apart from reopening embassy offices, Hungary expressed willingness to collaborate with and support Tanzania in various fields such as technology, education, and water, leveraging Hungary’s expertise in these areas.
“The longstanding relationship between Hungary and Tanzania faced challenges leading to the closure of our embassy. We are set to return next month to further strengthen our friendship and cooperation across multiple sectors.
“There are numerous areas where we can work together based on our experience and advancements. For instance, in the water sector, we possess technology and expertise that can benefit Tanzania,” he explained.
The discussions also involved the signing of agreements and cooperation documents in the water sector, with Hungary offering various technologies for water resource management.
