A Sunday morning service at St. Andrew Cathedral in Ifakara turned tense on July 28, 2024, when a 19-year-old local, Enock Masala, was caught attempting to steal the Holy Eucharist.
The incident unfolded during the first Mass of the day, raising serious concerns about security and religious education.
Masala, a resident of Ifakara, was reportedly not a member of the Catholic faith but had attended the morning Mass, which is a significant service in the church. Witnesses observed Masala, after receiving communion, trying to conceal the Eucharist with the intent of leaving the church unnoticed. The young man’s actions were quickly intercepted by the church’s security personnel, who detained him before he could exit the premises with the sacred element.
In his subsequent explanation, Masala revealed his lack of awareness regarding the sanctity of the Eucharist. He stated that he was unfamiliar with Catholic rituals and did not understand the gravity of removing the Eucharist from the church. Masala mentioned that he was influenced by seeing other worshippers participate in communion and erroneously believed that taking the Eucharist home was permissible. His lack of understanding about the sacred nature of the sacrament underscores a broader issue of religious knowledge among individuals who do not practice the faith.

Father Marcus Mirwatu, the rector of St. Andrew Cathedral, expressed strong disapproval of the incident. “The Eucharist is a sacred element of our faith, and its treatment with respect is paramount,” he said. Father Mirwatu condemned the act as a serious violation of religious practices and emphasized that such actions undermine the sanctity of worship. He also called for increased vigilance and educational efforts to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident has sparked a dialogue within the community about the need for better security measures in places of worship. Religious leaders and community members are discussing ways to enhance the protection of sacred objects and educate visitors about the importance of respecting religious customs. Some have suggested that interfaith dialogues and educational programs could help bridge gaps in understanding and prevent future misunderstandings.
The church intends to provide clearer guidelines to visitors about the significance of religious practices and the proper conduct expected within the church premises. This proactive approach aims to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their faith background, can understand and respect the sacred traditions of the church.
