The leadership of the National Service (JKT) has strongly emphasized that the training program aims to empower youths, not impose unnecessary hardship or abuse, in response to ongoing misconceptions and public concerns.
Major General Rajabu Mabele, the revered Commandant of JKT, categorically dismissed allegations of “torture” during the training sessions, asserting that the activities undertaken are strictly within the established curriculum and intended to cultivate discipline, resilience and essential life skills.
“Everything we do is training, not torture,” Major General Mabele declared with unwavering conviction. “If a trainee is instructed to assume a certain position, it is all part of the structured learning process, not an act of cruelty. We are here to educate, to nurture, and to transform these young individuals into responsible, productive citizens.”
The Head of Training and Operations at JKT headquarters Colonel Aisha Matanza,, echoed the Commandant’s views and highlighted the inclusive training approach. She emphasized equal expectations for both male and female trainees, ensuring no double standards, threats, or abuse towards women. The commitment remains to create a safe and empowering environment for all participants.

The decisive stance taken by JKT’s senior leadership comes amidst a backdrop of persistent public scrutiny and occasional protests surrounding the perceived harshness of the training program. Many have voiced concerns over the physical and psychological toll on the young recruits, with some going so far as to label the exercises as “torture.”
However, the JKT command has remained steadfast in its mission to transform these perceptions and demonstrate the true essence of the training. “We are not here to break the spirits of our youth,” Major General Mabele asserted. “On the contrary, we are dedicated to building them up, equipping them with the skills and mindset necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex world.”
The training regimen at JKT, while undoubtedly rigorous, is designed to instill a sense of discipline, teamwork, and self-reliance in the participants. From physical fitness challenges to classroom-based instruction, the curriculum is carefully crafted to cultivate the holistic development of each individual, preparing them for the demands of both military and civilian life.
As the JKT leadership continues to engage with the public and address lingering concerns, the broader narrative surrounding the organization’s training methods appears to be shifting. Increasingly, the training is being recognized not as a source of torment, but as a transformative experience that empowers the youth of Tanzania to reach their full potential.
