Over 2,000 youth from the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Youth Wing (UVCCM) are participating in a symbolic 200-kilometer walk from Butiama to Mwanza in honor of the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
This event, marking 25 years since Nyerere’s passing, is part of the Nyerere Day celebrations, scheduled for October 14, 2024. The walk coincides with the National Youth Week and the grand finale of the Uhuru Torch race, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan set to officiate as the guest of honor.
The walk was launched on October 9, 2024, at the CCM grounds in Butiama District by UVCCM Vice Chairperson, Rehema Sombi (MNEC), in the presence of UVCCM Secretary General, Jokate Mwegelo. The youth, walking in remembrance of Nyerere’s leadership, will engage in activities promoting youth participation in governance, particularly ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections.
This initiative revives the legacy of a similar march led by Mwalimu Julius Nyerere in 1967, when he walked from Butiama to Mwanza in support of the Arusha Declaration. More than half a century later, Tanzania’s youth are following in Nyerere’s footsteps, aiming to inspire the next generation to uphold his values of unity, freedom, and social justice.

Throughout the journey, the youth will spread messages of patriotism and civic responsibility, underscoring their role in the nation’s progress. As the culmination of the walk approaches, the country eagerly anticipates the arrival of the youth in Mwanza, where President Samia will officially receive them and oversee the closing ceremony of the Uhuru Torch race.
This year’s Nyerere Day celebrations hold significant meaning as they unite the nation in honoring the past while looking toward the future, with the youth leading the charge in maintaining Tanzania’s legacy of peace and unity.
