President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced a significant salary increase for public servants, recognizing their resilience and hard work in driving the nation’s economy forward.
Speaking to thousands who gathered in Singida to mark International Workers’ Day, the President declared a 35.1 percent increase in the minimum wage for government workers. The adjustment, which takes effect in July, will see the minimum monthly salary rise from TSh370,000 to TSh500,000.
“This raise is not just a number—it’s a reflection of the appreciation we have for all of you who have remained committed to building our country, even during difficult times,” said President Samia, greeted by applause and celebratory chants from the crowd.
The President emphasized that the wage increase was made possible by the country’s steady economic recovery, largely attributed to the efforts of Tanzanian workers across all sectors. “You carried us through tough times, and now that the economy is improving, it’s only right that you share in that progress,” she added.
But the good news didn’t stop there. President Samia made it clear that the increase applies not only to the minimum wage but also to other salary brackets. “This is a step toward restoring dignity in public service. We will adjust other pay grades based on the government’s financial position,” she assured.

The government is also turning its attention to the private sector. Through the Minimum Wage Board, a comprehensive review of salary structures is underway, aimed at ensuring workers outside the public sector benefit from fair and competitive wages.
Workers’ representatives and labor unions welcomed the announcement, praising the government’s willingness to listen to workers’ concerns and take action. For many, it was a moment of validation after years of calling for salary reforms.
With this increase, the government hopes to not only ease financial pressures but also inspire renewed motivation among public servants to continue serving the nation with dedication.
