A devastating midair collision near Reagan National Airport has left at least 19 people confirmed dead, with fears that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue.
The accident, which occurred on a clear night, involved an American Eagle passenger jet and a U.S. military Black Hawk helicopter, sending shockwaves through the aviation community and families of those on board.
The American Eagle Flight 5342 had departed Wichita, Kansas, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. Among them were athletes, coaches, and family members returning from a national figure skating development camp. The Black Hawk helicopter, part of a routine military training mission, had three soldiers on board.
Authorities say radio communications suggest the helicopter crew was aware of the approaching jetliner, but it remains unclear what led to the tragic collision. A dive team has recovered one of the aircraft’s black boxes, which investigators hope will shed light on the final moments before impact.
U.S. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas, where the flight originated, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, calling it a heartbreaking moment for the entire state.

“It’s devastating to think that we may have lost more than 60 Kansans at once,” he said at an emotional press conference at Reagan Airport. “Losing even one life is painful, but this—this is unimaginable.”
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Experts are reviewing flight paths, air traffic control instructions, and weather conditions at the time of the crash.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump weighed in on the tragedy through his social media platform, questioning whether the accident could have been avoided.
“This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!” he wrote.
Families of the victims are being contacted, and grief counselors are assisting those affected. Authorities are expected to provide more details as the investigation unfolds.
