Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) will stop printing its weekend editions of the Citizen newspaper next week, which has been printed for two decades.
Dozens of job losses are expected, but the company’s Managing Director Bakari Machumu said the decision is a transition to a digital first online subscription model.
The move came days after the company launched the digital service that has also witnessed a series of job cuts.
The 2022 quality index of print media in Tanzania placed the Citizen at fourth place behind Jamhuri, Mwananchi and Raia Mwema and followed by Daily News, The Guardian and Zanzibar Leo.
