Minister of Constructions, Abdallah Ulega, has stated that regional managers of the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) will be evaluated based on their ability to address challenges during emergencies to ensure all roads in the country remain passable at all times.

He made the remarks while addressing residents of Handeni and Kilindi districts during his inspection of the Handeni-Mafuleta road construction, spanning 20 kilometers in Tanga region.

“A manager who ensures their region’s roads are well-maintained, free of congestion, and addresses road users’ concerns will be regarded as a good manager,” said Ulega.

He added, “President Samia Suluhu Hassan has assigned me to inspect ongoing and stalled projects to ensure progress is made.”

Ulega urged Henan Highway Engineering Group (HEGO), the contractor for the Handeni-Mafuleta road, to work diligently as payments have already begun, and the government remains committed to funding the project to completion with the required quality.

“Construction is happening everywhere in this country. The President is determined to open up the nation across all sectors to boost the economy,” Ulega emphasized.

In addition, Ulega called for expedited efforts to identify dangerous mountainous areas and sharp corners along the Segera-Chalinze road. He stressed the need for these areas to be upgraded to reduce congestion and accidents.

“Road accidents continue to claim lives and cause disabilities. Complete the feasibility studies quickly so construction in critical areas can begin immediately,” he urged.

TANROADS Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Mohamed Besta, assured the minister that his directives would be implemented, including educating citizens on protecting road infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Handeni District Commissioner Albert Msando highlighted the economic significance of the Handeni-Singida road, describing it as the lifeline for residents of Handeni and Kilindi. Its completion will enhance transportation and trade, linking the Tanga region with central and lake zone regions.

Kilindi District CCM Chairman, Mohamed Kumbi, affirmed the government’s development efforts in the district and pledged continued support to achieve national goals.

The Handeni-Mafuleta road is part of the larger Handeni-Kiberashi-Singida highway, stretching 434.33 kilometers and connecting Tanga with central and lake zone regions. Its completion is expected to boost the Tanga port’s strategic importance.
