The Democratic Republic of Congo‘s national assembly elected Vital Kamerhe, whose home was violently attacked on Sunday, as speaker in a delayed vote, a key step towards installing a government five months after a presidential election.
The appointment of Kamerhe as the speaker, a key supporter of President Felix Tshisekedi, elevates him to the second-highest position in the country.
Out of the 407 parliament members who participated in Monday’s voting session, 371 supported Kamerhe’s bid for the speaker position. Additionally, MPs were scheduled to vote on candidates for six other roles in the lower house.

This vote paves the way for the Democratic Republic of Congo to form a government, a process that has been pending since the presidential election in December 2023, where Tshisekedi secured a second term.
On May 19, Congolese security forces said they had foiled an attempted coup and repelled an attack on Kamerhe’s home in the centre of the capital Kinshasa. Kamerhe’s spokesman, Michel Moto Muhima, said two guards were killed in the attack.
The coalition led by Tshisekedi, known as the Sacred Union, controls the majority in the 500-seat parliament with over 90 percent of the elected members.
At the age of 65, Kamerhe ran alongside Tshisekedi in the 2018 presidential campaign.
Previously, Kamerhe held positions as Tshisekedi’s chief of staff and as the deputy prime minister overseeing the economy. However, in 2020, he was detained as part of a corruption investigation.
