These birds target humans, similar to Alfred Hitchcock’s horror film The Birds, but unlike in the film, they have been causing significant disturbances for decades by preying on wildlife, invading tourist areas, and attacking poultry coops.
Poison is now being used in the towns of Watamu and Malindi to kill the first batch of this small, cruel species.
This extensive poisoning campaign aims to curb the crows’ advance toward the capital, Nairobi.
The birds, known on the coast as “crows” or “kurabu,” originally came from India and other parts of Asia, and have been migrating to different places using commercial shipping.
It is believed they were deliberately brought to East Africa around the 1890s in an attempt to address the increasing waste problem on the Zanzibar islands, which were then under British protection. From there, they spread to the mainland and migrated along the coast to Kenya.
