The Rural Energy Agency (REA) has intensified its door-to-door campaign aimed at educating rural residents on the benefits and uses of electricity while encouraging them to connect to the power grid.

Speaking during the campaign in Tabora Region, REA Community Development Officer Jaina Msuya highlighted the agency’s ongoing efforts to ensure that every household within the rural electrification project area has access to electricity.

“The government’s goal is to bring development to all citizens, including those in rural areas. That’s why significant investments have been made in various projects, including this rural electrification initiative,” Msuya stated.

She explained that the campaign involves visiting villages to engage households that have not yet connected to electricity despite being within the project’s reach. “We aim to understand the challenges they face and educate them on the benefits of electricity. For those ready to connect, we facilitate immediate installation and activation,” she added.

Msuya also addressed financial challenges faced by some residents, which prevent them from affording internal wiring. To address this, REA is promoting the use of a cost-effective device called UMETA (Ready-to-Use Electricity Kit), an alternative to traditional wiring.

“The Sixth Phase Government, led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has introduced the UMETA device free of charge to address this challenge. Now, residents only need to pay a connection fee of TZS 27,000, and the UMETA device will be provided at no cost,” Msuya noted.

The campaign reflects the government’s commitment to expanding electricity access and improving livelihoods in rural Tanzania.
