The Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister for Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities, Hon. Ridhiwani Kikwete, has announced that Tanzania will be raising the Freedom Torch atop Mount Kilimanjaro to proclaim to the world the strength of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar and to reaffirm its commitment to protecting the Noble Revolution of Zanzibar.
During a ceremony on October 15, 2024, at Kilimanjaro National Park, Minister Kikwete revealed that this year, President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has ordered the Freedom Torch to be taken to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro following its 195-day relay across the country.
Hon. Kikwete made these remarks while receiving a special team from the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) assigned to deliver the Freedom Torch and the Tanzanian National Flag to the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Furthermore, Minister Kikwete urged the youth to continue cherishing the ideals of the Freedom Torch, which was established by the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, in 1961.
Earlier, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hon. Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, expressed that raising the Freedom Torch on Mount Kilimanjaro this year will foster a spirit of patriotism among citizens, especially as Tanzania commemorates 60 years of independence and national achievements.
Additionally, the Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Hon. Nurdin Babu, expressed gratitude to President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving the ascent of the Freedom Torch to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro once again.
In his address, the leader of the special team, Lieutenant Colonel Khalid, assured Minister Kikwete that the team would safeguard and preserve the Freedom Torch and the Tanzanian National Flag until they reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
