The Tanzanian government is advancing initiatives to create favorable investment conditions and improve the infrastructure of the country’s energy sector, with a focus on ensuring all citizens, regardless of distance or income level, receive essential services.
Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Dr. James Mataragio, shared these commitments during a ceremony in Dar es Salaam aimed at recognizing agents and stakeholders who are promoting clean cooking energy solutions.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Mataragio emphasized the government’s dedication to delivering energy solutions equitably across Tanzania. He highlighted that a central responsibility of the Ministry of Energy is to foster cooperation with private sector stakeholders, service providers, and consumers. This collaboration, he noted, is essential for achieving the government’s objective of broad access to reliable energy, particularly in rural and underserved communities.
“Access to reliable and clean energy is a key government priority,” Dr. Mataragio said. “We are committed to advancing our infrastructure to bridge geographic and socioeconomic gaps, ensuring all citizens benefit from energy access.”
One of the government’s current goals is to expand the use of clean cooking energy, with a target for 80 percent of Tanzanian households to rely on clean cooking solutions by 2034. Dr. Mataragio underscored the environmental and health benefits of clean energy alternatives, highlighting the Tanzanian president’s role in championing these initiatives both nationally and internationally. President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, he noted, has been instrumental in promoting cleaner, sustainable energy to reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal, which contribute to health risks and environmental degradation.
The Deputy Permanent Secretary praised the annual engagement events among energy companies, agents, and other stakeholders as valuable platforms for discussing sector challenges and achievements. Dr. Mataragio urged other companies to adopt similar practices to enhance transparency, improve stakeholder alignment, and encourage efficient service delivery across Tanzania. He noted that such interactions provide insight into the sector’s progress, setting benchmarks that benefit both communities and the environment.
