Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has used the 9th Conference of Ministers of Fisheries from the African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) States to spotlight Tanzania’s significant fishing opportunities.
Addressing the conference on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Majaliwa emphasized the country’s extensive water resources, which include the Indian Ocean, numerous lakes, rivers, and both natural and artificial ponds.
Tanzania’s economic zone spans approximately 223,000 square kilometers, accounting for nearly 24% of the nation’s total land area. Majaliwa noted that current fishing activities primarily involve distant-water fleets.
In his introductory remarks, Minister of Livestock and Fisheries Abdallah Ulega outlined that the conference will focus on developing strategies to improve small-scale fishing. The goal is to create supportive environments for local fishermen.
The conference, which began with a technical experts’ meeting on September 9, 2024, aims to foster collaboration and advance the fishing sector in the ACP member states.
