China has launched its first training center dedicated to humanoid robots in Shanghai’s Pudong District.

The state-of-the-art facility aims to refine the abilities of robots to operate in diverse industries, marking a significant milestone in the country’s technological development.

Known as the Kylin Training Ground, the center spans 4,600 square meters and currently houses over 100 humanoid robots. These robots are undergoing specialized training to enhance their adaptability and efficiency. The program is set to expand, with plans to train up to 1,000 robots by 2027.

The initiative is led by the National and Local Co-Built Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center, a collaborative platform established in May 2024. Supported by national and municipal authorities, the center serves as a hub for advancing technologies in robotics and embodied intelligence. It represents China’s broader ambition to lead the global field in AI and robotics.

The facility’s focus is on equipping humanoid robots with practical skills for real-world applications, from manufacturing to healthcare and customer service. Training involves collecting vast amounts of physical interaction data—estimated to reach 10 million high-quality entries—enabling robots to “learn” and perform tasks with greater precision.

“This is not just about building robots; it’s about creating intelligent systems that can work seamlessly alongside humans,” said one of the project’s lead engineers. “The data we collect here will shape the next generation of robotics and AI technologies.”

The center collaborates with local robotics manufacturers and technology firms, ensuring a constant exchange of knowledge and resources. This partnership is expected to fast-track the development of robots capable of complex tasks, setting a new standard for AI integration in daily life.

The launch of the Kylin Training Ground is part of China’s larger push to integrate advanced technologies into its economy. As AI and robotics become increasingly central to global industries, the country’s investment in such projects reflects its goal of being at the forefront of this technological revolution.

Experts believe the center will have a ripple effect, influencing the development of humanoid robots not just in China but around the world. By creating a model for large-scale training and data collection, the facility could redefine how robots are prepared for real-world deployment.
