At the recent SADC Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government convened to discuss the impacts of the El Nino weather phenomenon, Tanzania has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the decisions and actions undertaken by the regional bloc.
Speaking on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has reiterated Tanzania’s firm commitment to the collective efforts of SADC members in addressing the pressing challenges related to water management and flood control.
Majaliwa emphasized that Tanzania fully endorses SADC’s initiatives aimed at enhancing water harvesting techniques, strengthening flood mitigation measures, and improving the infrastructure needed for effective water conservation. This strategic alignment, he stated, will enable the region to better utilize the available water resources during periods of drought and also mitigate the devastating consequences of heavy rainfall and flooding.
The Prime Minister further highlighted Tanzania’s active role in supporting the construction of dams across SADC member states, recognizing the critical importance of these water storage facilities in ensuring water security and managing extreme weather events. By contributing to the development of this vital infrastructure, Tanzania demonstrates its commitment to fostering regional cooperation and building resilience against the adverse effects of climate change.

This SADC emergency summit has assumed heightened significance, given the Southern African region’s increasingly severe experiences with the impacts of climate change, particularly the recurring El Nino phenomena that have led to disruptive patterns of heavy rains and devastating floods. Within this context, Tanzania’s unwavering support for SADC’s initiatives underscores the country’s strategic approach to addressing these complex challenges.
Notably, Tanzania’s focus on water harvesting and conservation aligns seamlessly with its National Water Policy, which aims to ensure the efficient and sustainable utilization of this precious resource. By actively collaborating with regional bodies like SADC, Tanzania has recognized the importance of collective action in tackling the multifaceted issues of water security, food security, and climate change resilience.
Tanzania’s decision to firmly back SADC’s efforts in the realm of water management and flood control represents a significant step forward in the region’s collective efforts to build a more resilient and sustainable future. This gesture of solidarity and cooperation reinforces Tanzania’s commitment to working closely with its regional partners to address the pressing challenges posed by the changing climate and its far-reaching consequences.
