The Minister of Construction, Innocent Bashungwa, has stated that the Tanzanian government continues to strengthen its partnership with Japan, particularly in the infrastructure sector. Tanzania is currently engaged in discussions with Japan regarding collaboration on various projects aimed at reducing traffic congestion in cities and towns.
He revealed that Tanzania has begun negotiations with Japan to cooperate on the design and construction of a flyover at the Morocco area in Dar es Salaam. This project is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and facilitate economic activities in the city.
Bashungwa made these remarks on October 3, 2024, while opening a strategic meeting on infrastructure collaboration between Tanzania and Japan aimed at ensuring the construction of high-quality infrastructure.
“We are currently in talks with Japan about the construction of the Morocco Flyover, focusing on both design and execution. We are also looking to improve other road intersections to reduce reliance on traffic lights,” Bashungwa emphasized.

He also noted that the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has opened up the country by creating an enabling environment that attracts investment and trade with other nations. This is further supported by strengthening partnerships and market access through the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Additionally, Bashungwa urged Tanzanians to continue supporting President Samia’s efforts by cooperating with various investors who come to the country to invest, conduct business, and eliminate bureaucracy in implementing development projects.
Deputy Minister of Transport, David Kihenzile, remarked that the development of any country heavily relies on the transportation sector, which is crucial for both domestic and international trade. He noted that Tanzania currently plays an important role as an international gateway for some neighboring countries, simplifying transport and access to global markets.
