New Facility to Address Mercury Pollution

The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is launching a significant project aimed at mitigating the environmental and health impacts associated with mercury use in gold mining. A new educational facility is being constructed in Geita Region, specifically designed to enhance public understanding of the dangers posed by mercury and to advocate for safer mining practices.

With an estimated cost of $1.5 million, this facility is projected to be completed by July of the coming year. The project is part of a wider initiative to control and eventually eliminate the use of mercury in mining operations, supported financially by the World Bank (WB). The initiative will be rolled out across seven key regions: Mwanza, Mara, Geita, Singida, Mbeya, Songwe, and Shinyanga, which are known for their significant gold mining activities.

Eng. Betrina Igulu, the project manager for NEMC’s mercury control program, discussed the importance of this new development during a recent press briefing held in Dar es Salaam. She explained that the educational building will serve as a crucial resource for local communities, miners, and other stakeholders, providing them with essential information about the detrimental effects of mercury exposure and the critical need for safer mining practices.

The new facility will feature a range of interactive exhibits and educational materials that illustrate the health impacts of mercury, including its adverse effects on the nervous system, kidneys, and overall well-being. Additionally, the center will offer training sessions for miners on alternative methods and technologies designed to reduce or completely eliminate mercury use.

This initiative aligns with Tanzania’s dedication to adhering to international environmental standards and achieving sustainable development goals. By raising awareness and fostering safer mining practices, the project aims to address the ongoing challenge of mercury contamination and protect both human health and the environment.

Given the persistent issue of mercury contamination in gold mining, this new educational center is anticipated to play a pivotal role in advancing environmental protection and public health in the regions affected. The collaborative efforts of NEMC and the World Bank highlight a strong commitment to tackling one of Tanzania’s pressing environmental challenges.
