Over 30,000 residents of Dodoma Region are anticipated to attend the historic launch of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) speed train, connecting Dar Es Salaam to Dodoma. This event, presided over by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, marks a significant milestone in Tanzania’s infrastructure development, promising to revolutionize transportation and spur economic growth.
In a briefing held in Dodoma, Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule underscored the region’s preparedness for the event. She noted that the new railway service is poised to open up the region economically, enhancing trade links with neighboring areas. “All is set for this great revolution that is destined to open up our region economically, broadening trade links with other neighboring regions,” she remarked.
The SGR train, which commenced its pre-operation services on July 25, 2025, has already made a substantial impact, transporting between 900 and 1,000 passengers daily. This new development has been warmly received by residents, who are encouraged to tap into the opportunities that the improved transportation link presents. Commissioner Senyamule emphasized the potential for economic benefits, urging residents to capitalize on the increased connectivity and efficiency offered by the SGR.

The SGR project is a cornerstone of Tanzania’s broader infrastructure development strategy. The initial phase, connecting Dar Es Salaam to Morogoro, officially launched in June 2024. This modern rail system, with trains running at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, is expected to significantly cut travel times, enhance safety, and provide a more environmentally friendly transportation option. The journey between Dar Es Salaam and Morogoro now takes about two hours, compared to the previous four-hour bus journey or five-hour ride on the old meter-gauge railway.
The official launch of the Dar es Salaam to Dodoma route is a testament to the government’s commitment to modernizing the country’s transportation infrastructure. President Samia’s presence at the inauguration highlights the significance of this project for the nation’s economic development and regional integration.
The Tanzania Railways Corporation Director General, Masanja Kungu Kadogosa, emphasized the transformative impact of the SGR. He pointed out that this modern rail system not only improves travel efficiency but also enhances the punctuality and productivity of commuters. The SGR is set to become a vital artery for Tanzania, boosting economic activities and fostering development across regions.
