For the second time in 2024, Tanzanian author Yericko Nyerere has claimed the Best African Book Writer award, further solidifying his growing reputation in the literary world.
Nyerere was announced as the winner during a grand ceremony held on the night of September 14 in Lagos, Nigeria. The award, presented by the prestigious MVAA (Most Valuable African Authors), recognizes excellence in African literature and celebrates writers who contribute significantly to the continent’s literary landscape.

Competing against prominent authors from across Africa, Yericko emerged victorious, surpassing notable names like Onyi Mwabineli and Pemi Agunda from Nigeria, Yanina Writer from Mozambique, Fiston Mwanza Mujila from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Dr. Paula O.M. Otukile from Botswana. These writers are considered some of the finest in African literature, making Yericko’s victory even more remarkable.

Yericko Nyerere, who is also a member of CHADEMA’s National General Assembly, has become the first Tanzanian to win three consecutive Best Writer awards in just two years. In 2023, he was honored with the Best Book Writer award by the Zikomo Africa Awards held in Lusaka, Zambia. Earlier this year, in July 2024, he secured another Best Book Writer title at the Shining Stars Africa Awards.
Yericko’s works have gained widespread recognition not just for their creativity but for their thought-provoking narratives that delve into African identity, social issues, and history. His latest achievement in Lagos underscores his influence as a leading literary figure in Africa. The MVAA award marks a significant milestone for Yericko, and he has become a source of national pride for Tanzania, inspiring a new generation of writers on the continent.
In his acceptance speech, Yericko thanked his supporters and acknowledged the power of storytelling in transforming societies. “Literature is not just about telling stories. It’s about reflecting who we are as a people, our struggles, and our triumphs. This award is for all African writers who continue to push boundaries and make our voices heard globally.”
