A nine-month-old baby girl who was kidnapped in Nyihogo Street, Kahama Municipality on December 9, 2023, has been found alive.
Government authorities stated that the baby was found on April 18 this year and handed over to her parents on July 18 this year after DNA tests confirmed her identity.
The baby, now one year and four months old, was found after being abandoned by a woman who had allegedly kidnapped her by deceiving her sister and then disappearing with her to an unknown location.

After being abandoned, the baby was found by good Samaritans who saw her in the area and reported to the Kisisi Ward government leadership, who took her to the Social Welfare office.
Confirming the receipt and handover of the baby to her parents, the Social Welfare Officer of the municipality, Alinda Bwakea, said yesterday that after being found, the baby was taken to their office by the Ward government officials following all legal procedures.
She said that after the baby was found, they contacted those who had reported the missing child, and those who came forward underwent DNA testing to confirm if she was their child.
The officer said that the results showed that she was indeed their child who had been kidnapped, and they had been searching for her throughout that period.
Bwakea called on parents, guardians, and other families to be more vigilant in protecting their children, warning that strangers might lure them with items like soda and candy as part of traps set by criminals to abduct children.
The biological mother of the baby, Rose Medadi, narrating the incident and how her child was kidnapped, said that on that day her daughter was being carried by her seven-year-old sister in their home environment. They encountered the thief who sent them to buy airtime vouchers at the shop and left the baby with them.
“I remember my child saying she was sent to buy airtime vouchers by a woman who gave her 2,000 Tanzanian Shillings and asked her to give her the baby because she was in a hurry. She did so without any fear, and when she returned, she did not find the woman who had left,” she recounted.
The baby’s father, Paschal Ng’ondi, said that after receiving reports of their child being kidnapped, he informed the ward government and the police and began efforts to search for her.
He said that on April 18, they received news of the baby being found and immediately went to the Social Welfare office.
He said that because they knew their child well, they recognized her when they arrived, but legal procedures, including DNA testing, had to be followed, and once completed, they were handed their child back, and they are continuing to care for her, urging other parents to be vigilant with their children.
