Tragedy struck Lake Rukwa on January 23, 2025, when a sudden and violent storm swept through, disrupting the lives of local fishermen.
Out of 550 fishermen who were on the lake during the storm, 540 have been rescued, but 10 remain missing as search efforts continue.
The storm caught fishermen from Nankanga and Mtowisa wards off guard, with strong winds and rough waters making it nearly impossible for small boats to navigate. Rescue efforts were immediately launched, involving local residents, emergency responders, and the Fire and Rescue Force.
Sumbawanga District Commissioner Nyakia Chirukile provided updates on the situation, explaining that search operations are ongoing, with divers working tirelessly to locate the missing fishermen. By the night of January 24, no further rescues had been reported, leaving families in anguish as they await news.
In response to the disaster, government officials quickly arrived at the scene to oversee rescue efforts. Home Affairs Minister Innocent Bashungwa and Livestock and Fisheries Minister Dr. Ashatu Kijaji visited Nankanga Ward, accompanied by the Commissioner General of the Fire and Rescue Force, CGF John Masunga. The team brought specialized divers and rescue equipment to strengthen the mission.
Minister Bashungwa delivered a message of support from President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who immediately authorized the deployment of a military helicopter equipped with rescue tools to aid in the operation. “The government is fully committed to ensuring the safety of every citizen and will spare no effort in these rescue operations,” Minister Bashungwa said.
Dr. Kijaji commended local residents for their heroic efforts, noting that many worked tirelessly to assist rescue teams and identify unregistered fishermen who were on the lake during the storm. “The collaboration between citizens and authorities has been remarkable and inspiring. This solidarity gives us hope as we continue to search for the missing,” she said.
