The Member of Parliament for Ilemela, Dr. Angelina Mabula, was compelled to issue a formal apology in the Parliament on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, after retracting her earlier claims that male, female, and child patients were being housed together in the same hospital ward.
This admission followed the presentation of evidence that contradicted her initial assertions, which had sparked concern and debate among her fellow parliamentarians.
Dr. Mabula’s original remarks, made in the course of a parliamentary session, suggested that inadequate infrastructure at some healthcare facilities had led to a situation where patients of all genders and ages were sharing the same ward space. This statement prompted a response from Dr. Festo Dugange, Deputy Minister in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI), who categorically refuted the claims, stating that such an arrangement was not taking place.
In an effort to substantiate her position, Dr. Mabula presented evidence to the Parliament. However, upon review, the evidence failed to support her claims, leading to a ruling that her statements were misleading. Recognizing the gravity of her error, Dr. Mabula took the floor before the close of the parliamentary session and issued a formal retraction and apology. She acknowledged the misunderstanding and expressed regret for any confusion caused by her previous statements.

“I sincerely apologize if my earlier remarks caused any disturbance or misunderstanding. After reviewing the evidence presented, I retract my previous statement and acknowledge that there is indeed no mixing of male, female, and child patients in the same ward. The challenges remain, particularly regarding infrastructure, but my previous description was inaccurate,” Dr. Mabula stated.
Following her apology, the Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Tulia Ackson, declared the matter closed and ordered the retraction to be reflected in the official parliamentary records.
