Bishop of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, Dr. Maimbo Fabian, expressed deep concern over the growing trend of pastors and young people abandoning Christianity in favor of churches promising miraculous wealth through prayer.
Dr. Fabian’s remarks came in the wake of Vice President Dr. Philip Mpango’s call for religious leaders to combat harmful teachings and actions that violate national laws, including those promoted by some religious figures.
Dr. Fabian delivered his comments during the fourth national conference of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, held on Sunday. He highlighted a troubling trend where individuals are leaving traditional Christian teachings for churches that offer miraculous solutions without the need for honest work. According to Dr. Fabian, many are misled by showmanship rather than genuine spiritual guidance.
The Bishop’s concerns follow recent government actions against controversial religious practices. The government has recently closed the Christian Life Church and expelled its leader, Pastor Domique Kashoix Dibwe, known as ‘Kiboko ya Wachawi.’ The church was accused of promoting alarmist teachings and practices that contradict Tanzanian ethics and the Societies Act, including inciting violence against those suspected of witchcraft.

Dr. Fabian criticized the trend of abandoning Christian doctrine in favor of miraculous promises, which he says leads to exploitation and a departure from core Christian values. “It is troubling to see a significant number of pastors and young people leaving Christianity for churches that offer illusions of miracles. These experiences are mere showmanship and lead to exploitation,” he said. “People are forgetting their teachings and embracing practices that are contrary to their faith.”
His call to return to genuine Christian values aims to address issues of exploitation and preserve traditional religious principles.
