President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania is participating in the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she is presenting Tanzania’s efforts in poverty reduction, food security, and sustainable development.
The summit, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, focuses on social inclusion, combating hunger, sustainable development, and global governance reforms.
President Hassan highlighted Tanzania’s achievements in addressing poverty through climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy projects, and resilience-building strategies. She emphasized the importance of international collaboration to overcome shared global challenges, particularly in the face of climate change, which has significantly impacted Tanzanian communities reliant on agriculture.
During the summit’s opening session, discussions centered on promoting energy transitions and eradicating hunger, aligning with Tanzania’s national priorities. President Hassan advocated for increased support for developing nations to access clean energy technologies and enhance agricultural productivity through innovation and global partnerships. Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Thabit Kombo reinforced these priorities, emphasizing that Tanzania seeks to leverage platforms like the G20 to strengthen its economic resilience and ensure sustainable development.
This summit also marks an important moment for African representation, as the African Union has been officially inducted as a permanent G20 member, a milestone achieved under India’s G20 presidency in 2023. This move has elevated Africa’s voice on global platforms, further aligning with Tanzania’s strategic goals of regional and international collaboration.
