Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir, during a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The attack, which occurred in late April 2025, claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator.

The attackers, reportedly affiliated with The Resistance Front, a Pakistan-based militant group, are believed to have targeted the victims based on religious identity, sparking widespread condemnation across India.

President Putin expressed his “deepest condolences” to the victims’ families and reiterated Russia’s solidarity with India in the global fight against terrorism. He called the incident “inhuman” and said such attacks must be met with strong international cooperation.

In response, India has taken firm diplomatic and strategic measures. The Cabinet Committee on Security, led by Prime Minister Modi, decided to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, an agreement signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan. Indian authorities cited credible evidence of cross-border terrorism in justifying the move.

India also expelled senior Pakistani diplomats, shut down the Integrated Check Post at Attari, and revoked the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals.

The international community has stood in support of India. Countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea, and Nepal have condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with the victims’ families.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe, aiming to identify the attackers and their collaborators. Authorities have intensified security operations across the Kashmir Valley and are working to safeguard both locals and tourists amid heightened tensions.

The incident has further strained relations between India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed neighbors with a long-standing dispute over Kashmir. While India accuses Pakistan of harboring terrorist elements, Islamabad has denied any involvement and has urged for an impartial international investigation.
