Sudan is teetering on the edge of a catastrophic famine, with the United Nations and various humanitarian organizations sounding alarms about the dire situation.
As the conflict between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rages on, the humanitarian crisis deepens, pushing millions to the brink of starvation.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has identified that more than 755,000 people are currently experiencing “catastrophic” conditions (Phase 5), where more than two people out of 10,000 die daily from hunger.
An additional 8.5 million are in Phase 4, labeled as “emergency” levels of food insecurity . The widespread destruction of crops and significant price hikes for imported food have exacerbated the situation, leaving the country with one of the worst acute food insecurity levels ever recorded.

Humanitarian agencies have been mobilizing efforts to mitigate the crisis.
However, the UN’s appeal for $2.7 billion to address the emergency is severely underfunded, with less than 5% of the required funds raised. This shortfall has led to cutbacks in food aid, further endangering millions.
Malnutrition is reaching alarming levels, with reports indicating that one child dies every two hours in some of the hardest-hit regions like North Darfur .
The United Nations and various international bodies have repeatedly called for a ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian aid. They emphasize the need for diplomatic and financial efforts to halt the fighting and provide the necessary support to avert a full-blown famine
