Tanzania has received an additional grant of 548 million Japanese Yen, equivalent to 8.9 billion Tanzanian Shillings, for the renovation of Kigoma Port. This follows the amendment of two aid agreements between Tanzania, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Embassy of Japan.
The revised aid agreements were signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Natu El-maamry Mwamba, on behalf of the Tanzanian government; the Ambassador of Japan to Tanzania, H.E. Yasushi Misawa; and the Resident Representative of JICA Tanzania, Mr. Hitoshi Ara, on behalf of Japan.
Speaking after the signing of the amended agreements, Dr. Mwamba stated that initially, the Japanese government, through agreements signed on February 4, 2022, provided a grant of 2.73 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to 44.42 billion Tanzanian Shillings, for the renovation of the port.

“The total aid provided by the Japanese government now stands at 3.27 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to 53.35 billion Tanzanian Shillings. The additional funds aim to bridge the gap caused by the depreciation of the Japanese Yen and the Tanzanian Shilling against the US dollar,” explained Dr. Mwamba.
He noted that the project would enhance the safety and efficiency of passenger loading and cargo unloading operations by renovating the Kigoma Port passenger terminal, constructing a cargo storage warehouse funded by the Tanzanian government, and building connecting roads to and from the port. These improvements will boost trade and transportation in the area.
Furthermore, Dr. Mwamba highlighted that the availability of these funds continues Japan’s support for development projects in Tanzania, benefiting sectors such as agriculture, water, health, energy, transportation, urban development, education, and public financial management.
Dr. Mwamba also assured the Japanese government of Tanzania’s commitment, under the leadership of H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, to strengthening cooperation for the development of citizens on both sides. He emphasized that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
