The Kenyan government has taken a significant step in the fight against HIV by allowing human drug pharmacies to provide initial services for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). This decision follows studies indicating that faster access to PrEP will help more people obtain and use these medications.
Research conducted under the National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP) in collaboration with PharmPrEP in high-prevalence areas has shown positive results. The number of PrEP users has increased from 10,000 in 2016 to 438,003 in 2023, demonstrating substantial growth and hope in the fight against HIV.
According to health statistics, proper use of PrEP within the required timeframe reduces the risk of contracting HIV for individuals engaged in high-risk sexual behavior by approximately 99%. This highlights the importance of making these medications accessible and how they can help reduce new HIV infections in Kenya.

The government’s decision to allow pharmacies to provide PrEP services aims to improve the accessibility of these medications to more people, especially in high-prevalence areas. This move boosts hopes of reducing HIV infections and offers more citizens the opportunity to protect themselves against this dangerous disease.
Health experts encourage individuals at higher risk of HIV infection to come forward and utilize these services for their own benefit and the welfare of the community as a whole. Through this initiative, Kenya continues to demonstrate its commitment to combating HIV and ensuring better health for its citizens.
