The Deputy Registrar of Political Parties in the country Mohamed Ali Ahmed, has announced ongoing revisions to political party laws and codes of conduct aimed at ensuring gender equality, enhancing accountability, and preventing harassment against women to enable their full participation in politics and democracy.
Speaking on behalf of the Deputy Registrar, Senior Legal Officer Abdulrazak Ali addressed a review meeting held at the ZURA Maisara conference hall in Unguja. The meeting, which involved various stakeholders including government institutions, political parties, civil society organizations, activists, and religious leaders, focused on the barriers hindering women’s involvement in political contests and participation.

According to Ali, the ongoing revisions include changes to the Political Parties Act (2019) and the party codes of conduct, among other regulations. These amendments are expected to address and eliminate harassment faced by women in political engagement.
Ali emphasized that gender equality is non-negotiable and stressed the importance of political parties adhering to robust guidelines that uphold ethical standards and condemn harassment against women. He also highlighted the need to support female politicians, candidates, and voters who may face threats, violence, scandal, or mockery based on their gender while vying for various leadership positions.
Earlier, welcoming the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, and Children, Dr. Mzuri Issa, Director of TAMWA Zanzibar, noted complaints of women being marginalized in their political participation efforts, with inadequate systems for reporting such incidents and accessing justice.
In response, Anna Athanas Paul, Deputy Minister of Community Development, Gender, Elderly, and Children Zanzibar, stated that the ministry has developed special strategies, including training, resources, and advisory programs, to support female candidates.
