Deputy Minister of Minerals, Dr. Steven Kiruswa, met with small-scale miners, processors, and mineral traders in Songwe Region to address various challenges they face in their workplaces.
Speaking at the meeting held in Saza Village, Songwe District, Dr. Kiruswa stated that the Ministry of Minerals and its institutions have established a mineral clinic for miners nationwide. The clinic aims to resolve issues affecting miners within the sector and those intertwined with the mining sector, including the energy sector.
Dr. Kiruswa explained that the government recognizes the contribution of small-scale miners to the national economy. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the challenges they face and develop a sustainable strategy to address them in collaboration with sectors related to the mining industry.
Earlier, describing the production status of gold from small-scale miners and processors, the Resident Mining Officer for Songwe Region, Chone Malembo, reported that from July 2023 to July 2024, a total of 1,059.35 kilograms were produced by small-scale miners.

On his part, the Chairman of the Songwe Region Small-Scale Miners Association (SOREMA), Emmanuel Kamaka, outlined the challenges facing miners, including the lack of reliable electricity, excessive taxes throughout the mining value chain, and the issuance of licenses in active areas, all of which complicate mining activities.
The launch of the clinic is part of the implementation of resolutions made during the 2024 annual general meeting of the Federation of Miners Associations of Tanzania (FEMATA). The clinic includes experts from various public institutions such as TANESCO, GST, STAMICO, NEMC, and TRA.
