The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) has unveiled plans to form a high-level committee that will seek a direct audience with President Samia Suluhu Hassan to address urgent concerns around legal reforms, human rights, and governance in Tanzania.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, May 2, TLS President Boniface Mwabukusi said the committee will include respected public figures, including retired senior officials and former cabinet ministers. While the names of the members remain under wraps for now, Mwabukusi emphasized that their experience and integrity will guide efforts to push for meaningful dialogue with the country’s top leadership.

“Our intention is to sit down with the President and have an honest, civil conversation about the way forward,” Mwabukusi said. “There are a number of issues that need attention, and we believe the best way to handle them is through peaceful engagement and constructive dialogue.”

The committee is expected to begin its work immediately, reviewing key challenges facing the judiciary and broader governance issues. TLS hopes to present a formal request to meet with the President within the coming weeks, with the goal of achieving progress before the end of May.

Mwabukusi noted that the committee will explore legal pathways and public engagement to ensure national concerns are not ignored. “If we are not granted a meeting, then we will consult the public and our members on what steps to take next,” he said.

This move comes as Tanzania continues to navigate legal reforms and democratic development. In recent years, President Samia has shown interest in improving the justice sector, advocating for the use of technology in the judiciary and calling for the removal of outdated laws that slow down justice delivery.

The TLS initiative is seen as part of a broader effort to support national unity and reform, echoing the government’s own agenda of reconciliation, reform, and resilience. Mwabukusi, who took office in 2024 after a heated bar association election, has pledged to uphold TLS’s mandate and push for positive change in line with the society’s strategic vision.
