President Vladimir Putin of Russia convened a press conference with journalists from BRICS nations as part of the lead-up to the XVI BRICS Summit in Kazan.

The discussion covered a range of significant topics, highlighting Russia’s perspectives on international relations, security, and economic collaboration.

Nuclear Weapons Concerns Putin asserted that while the technical aspects of creating nuclear weapons are not particularly challenging today, he raised doubts about Ukraine’s current capabilities in this area. He firmly stated that Russia would not allow Ukraine to develop nuclear weapons.

NATO’s Role in the Conflict The president characterized NATO as conducting a proxy war against Russia using Ukrainian forces. He emphasized that Ukraine lacks the advanced weaponry to engage in conflict independently, with such technology being supplied by NATO allies.

BRICS’ Unique Position Putin described BRICS as a cooperative organization, not designed to oppose any nations, but rather to promote shared values and mutual interests among its member states, setting it apart from many other international bodies.

Global Dependence on BRICS He pointed out that sectors like food and energy are critically dependent on the contributions of BRICS countries, underlining their importance for global stability and survival.

Russian-Chinese Cooperation The president stressed that the partnership between Russia and China is essential for maintaining global strategic stability, reinforcing the notion of collaborative international relations.

Critique of U.S. Foreign Policy He criticized the United States for dismantling the Middle East Quartet, which he claimed had facilitated smoother negotiations. Putin stated that U.S. monopolization of the process ultimately led to its failure.

Resolution of the Palestinian Issue Putin emphasized that establishing a fully-fledged Palestinian state is crucial for resolving the enduring conflict in the region.

Trade in National Currencies He noted a significant shift in Russia’s foreign trade, with 95% now conducted in national currencies, a change he attributed to U.S. policies.
