The Tanzanian Railway Authority has announced an increase in train services to the northern regions of the country, including Tanga, Kilimanjaro, and Arusha. Starting December 7, 2024, the number of weekly train journeys will rise from two to three, with additional services on Wednesdays, alongside the existing Monday and Friday schedules.
The new schedule aims to better serve passengers, especially as the country approaches the end-of-year holiday season, a time traditionally marked by increased travel. According to Fredy Mwanjala, the spokesperson for the railway authority, this adjustment comes in response to the anticipated surge in passengers traveling to and from the northern regions of Tanzania.
“Adding the Wednesday service is a strategic decision to manage the expected rise in passenger numbers, particularly as people head towards the northeastern parts of the country for the holidays,” said Mwanjala.

The expanded service is expected to improve accessibility and convenience for both locals and tourists heading to these key destinations. With the festive season approaching, the increase in train services is expected to ease congestion on the roads, providing a safe and efficient alternative for travelers.
This move also highlights the ongoing efforts by the Tanzanian Railway Authority to enhance its services and respond to the changing needs of the public. The newly adjusted schedule reflects a proactive approach to better serving passengers and ensuring smoother, more reliable travel across the region.
