Three people have tragically lost their lives, and 32 others are receiving medical treatment in the Philippines after consuming sea turtle meat.
The incident took place in the coastal town of Maguindanao del Norte, where members of the Teduray community fell seriously ill after eating the meat of a sea turtle last week.
According to local authorities, those affected by the consumption of the turtle meat experienced symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and severe stomach pain. While some of the hospitalized victims have been treated and sent home, sadly, three individuals have died.
Although hunting and eating sea turtles is illegal under the Philippines’ environmental protection laws, the practice persists in certain communities, particularly in rural areas. Sea turtles feed on various marine plants and organisms, and some of these can be toxic. When consumed, the meat of a sea turtle can carry dangerous toxins, leading to poisoning.
Irene Dillo, a local official in the area, shared the details with the BBC, explaining that not only humans but also animals, including dogs, cats, and chickens, that had eaten the turtle meat, also died from the toxins.
“Many of the hospitalized individuals have been released, but unfortunately, three lives were lost in this tragic incident,” Dillo said.
This incident brings to light the dangers of consuming certain types of marine life, especially when not properly prepared. It’s not the first time that eating sea turtle meat has led to health issues. Back in 2013, 68 people in the Eastern Samar region became ill after eating sea turtle meat, and four of them passed away as a result.

Experts have long warned about the risks of consuming sea turtles, and this tragedy highlights the importance of following environmental laws designed to protect both the health of local communities and the endangered species themselves.
In response, the Philippine government is continuing its efforts to protect marine life and raise awareness about the importance of preserving sea turtles. Authorities are urging the public to avoid hunting or eating sea turtles to prevent further tragedies and to help safeguard the species for future generations.
